Trivia: The name of Joan Cusack's character (Liz)
is the same one as of her character in High Fidelity, which also
features her brother John
Cusack in the lead role.
David Gerrold, the author the
book, adopted a son as an openly-gay man. In his novella, the sexuality of the
protagonist is not disclosed, but in his novel, he is identified as gay. In the
Hollywood movie version, the protagonist is straight (with a female love
interest), causing some criticism from some members of the gay community
nationwide.
One of the key themes in this
film is the search for identity. John
