On
This Day…
Hayley
Mills was born on this day in 1946.
Hayley
Mills (born 18 April 1946, London)
is an English actress. The daughter of Sir John Mills and Mary Hayley Bell, and
sister of actress Juliet Mills,
Mills began her acting career as a child and was hailed as a promising
newcomer, winning the BAFTA Award
for Most Promising Newcomer for Tiger Bay (1959), the Academy
Juvenile Award for Pollyanna
(1960) and Golden Globe
Award for New Star of the Year – Actress in 1961. During her
early career, she appeared in several films for Walt Disney, and is
perhaps best known for her dual role
as twins Susan and Sharon in the Disney film The Parent
Trap (1961).
Trivia:
Her son, with Roy Boulting,
is Crispian Mills, lead
singer of Kula Shaker.
Signed with Sony; their second single went straight to number 2 in UK charts.
He is now part of "The Jeevas".
Goddaughter
of Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Noel Coward.
In
the movie That Darn
Cat! (1965), her habit of biting her nails precluded her from using
her own hands in close-ups. A studio worker, Tricia Blain, who just happened to
be hanging around the set watching the filming was selected to serve as a
double in those shots that required close-ups of the actress' hands.
She
and her father John Mills
were the first Oscar-winning father-daughter couple
Of
the Oscar-winning father-daughter couples, she and her father are one of two
couples (the other is Jane Fonda/Henry Fonda) where the
daughter won an Academy award before the father did.
At
the age of 16 she was offered the title role in Stanley Kubrick's Lolita (1962) but her
parents decided against it because they feared that the film's steamy subject
matter might taint her wholesome image. The part went to Sue Lyon instead. In later
years, Mills admitted that she regretted not taking the part.
She
had hit recordings, on both sides of The Atlantic, with "Let's Get
Together" (1961), which she performed in the film The Parent Trap (1961),
and "Johnny Jingo" (1962).
