On
This Day…
Iggy
Pop was born on this day in 1947
Iggy
Pop (born James Newell Osterberg, Jr.; April 21, 1947) is an American singer,
songwriter, musician, and actor. Though widely known as an innovator and
"godfather" of punk rock,
Pop's music has encompassed a number of styles over the years, including pop, hard rock, jazz and blues.[2] Pop became known
as 'Iggy' in high school, during which time he served as drummer for local
blues band The Iguanas. He is vocalist of influential protopunk band The Stooges (Pop and the
other surviving members of the group reunited in 2003), having become known,
since the late 1960s, for his outrageous and unpredictable stage antics.
Trivia:
The character "Funboy" in the original The Crow (1994) was
modeled after him, and he was supposed to be cast as "Funboy", but
scheduling prohibited him from being in the movie. He instead appeared as
"Curve" in its sequel, The Crow:
City of Angels (1996).
Computer
animators on Peter Jackson's
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship
of the Ring (2001) used his movement and body as a basis for the
character Gollum.
His
group, The Stooges, although
never a huge commercial success, was essential in the development of punk rock.
In fact, the unifying trait of all the members of what were arguably the two
greatest "punk" bands, Ramones
and The Sex Pistols, was their
idolizing of Iggy and The Stooges.
The
Stooges were voted the 78th Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Artists of all time by
Rolling Stone.
David Bowie produced The Stooges' "Raw
Power" album as well as Iggy's first two solo albums, "The
Idiot" & "Lust For Life". "The Idiot" Contains the
original version of the song "China Girl", later covered famously by
Bowie.
