FILM 1217: GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN

A documentary on art-scene commentator Paul Hasegawa-Overacker's relationship with enigmatic photographer Cindy Sherman.

MY VERDICT:  This documentary combines a look at the artworld and the relationships within it.  I did originally think this was purely a documentary about the work of Cindy Sherman and if you go into it with that expectation then you will be disappointed.  It does, however,  have some information about her work in case you’re not sure what she does.  The documentary is primarily about Paul H-O, a public access TV presenter on a show called Gallery Beat.  And it is through this show that he gets the opportunity to meet Cindy Sherman, an art superstar.  After a number of interviews they started a relationship where Paul H-O discovers what it is like to be the partner of someone both famous and very successful.  He wasn’t happy to be the ‘wife’ in the relationship and this rallied against the feminist messages in a lot of Sherman’s work.
