FILM 1786: HEREDITARY
TRIVIA: In Peter's first scene at school, the words "Escaping Fate" is on the chalkboard with the teacher discussing it. This is a reference to Halloween (1978), where the main character discusses the same thing in class. Appropriately, this movie was released the same day as the trailer for Halloween (2018).
In an interview, Alex Wolff explains that he wanted to actually break his own nose for the scene where his character slams his head into a desk. Director Ari Aster respectfully declined that offer and told Wolff they'd give him a soft, cushioned desk for the scene. When it was time for the scene to be shot, Wolff slams his head into the desk only to discover that it was not soft nor made out of foam that resulted into Wolffs actual blood gushing down to his knees
Allegedly a trailer for the film was accidentally shown at a screening of Peter Rabbit(2018) in Australia. However, a very similar event supposedly happened in 2007, where a trailer for The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 was allegedly shown to a theatre full of small children ( source: moviefone.com/2007/04/06/theater-accidentally-shows-hills-have-eyes-2-to-little-kids/amp/ ) Similar stories have been reported several times since then, even reported by reputable news sources, with a graphic horror film allegedly being shown to a group of small children, who were at the theater to see a kids' movie. In all alleged instances, the theatre is said to give free movie vouchers for all present. The similarities of these stories have made some speculate that it is nothing more than an urban legend.
This was director Ari Aster's feature debut.
Ari Aster was heavily influenced by the film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (1989).
Toni Collete (Annie) is actually 22 years younger than her on screen husband, Gabriel Byrne.

FILM 1732: THE BEGUILED
TRIVIA: For this film, Sofia Coppola won
the prize of Best Director at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. It marked the
first time in 50 years a woman won the award, and only the second time overall.
The production ran into a minor
crisis when several costumes were completely ruined in the washing machine.
According to costume designer Stacey Battat, her creations were doomed as someone put bleach
in the washing machine and forgot, and then put clothes in the same machine.
The costumes had to be recreated immediately for the production not to run off
schedule.
The sponge scene with Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell required
several takes, as the afternoon light inflicted the cinematography. By the time
the scene wrapped, Kidman had sponged Farrell for almost two hours.
Sofia Coppola chose
the 1.66 : 1 aspect ratio because she wanted to make the film feel
claustrophobic.
Interior scenes were filmed in the
New Orleans home of actress Jennifer Coolidge.
Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell began
filming this film only few weeks after they finished working together on The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017).
Both films would go on to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2017 Cannes Film
Festival and would win awards in the official competition ("The
Beguiled" won the Directing award for Sofia Coppola while
"The Killing of a Sacred Deer" shared the Screenplay award with Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here (2017)).
Shot in 26 days.
The cast went through several
lessons during filming. They had a sewing teacher, a dancing teacher, took
etiquette classes, corset training lessons and had to cook and eat meals
together. A Civil War reenactor demonstrated how to dress wounds, and a priest
explained prayers from the Book of Matthew and Sofia Coppola distributed
an antebellum etiquette book, titled "How to Be a Good Southern
Lady".
Colin Farrell's
favorite shoot in his career, praising his co-stars and his director; "To
be surrounded by talented, decent, smart, insightful creative and serious women
- I was spoiled by Sofia Coppola who set a particular mood of comfort, ease and
trust. It allows you as an actor to play and explore."
Sofia Coppola stated
that this is NOT a remake of the 1971 film of the same title, but an adaption
of the same Thomas Cullinan novel that film is based on.

FILM 1730: MOTHER!
TRIVIA: Throughout the movie, no
one's name is mentioned.
The following statement by Darren Aronofsky was
released a week before the premiere: "It is a mad time to be alive. As the
world population nears 8 billion we face issues too serious to fathom:
ecosystems collapse as we witness extinction at an unprecedented rate; migrant
crises disrupt governments; a seemingly schizophrenic US helps broker a
landmark climate treaty and months later withdraws; ancient tribal disputes and
beliefs continue to drive war and division; the largest iceberg ever recorded
breaks off an Antarctic ice shelf and drifts out to sea. At the same time we
face issues too ridiculous to comprehend: in South America, tourists twice kill
rare baby dolphins that washed ashore, suffocating them in a frenzy of selfies;
politics resembles sporting events; people still starve to death while others
can order any meat they desire. As a species our footprint is perilously
unsustainable yet we live in a state of denial about the outlook for our planet
and our place on it. From this primordial soup of angst and helplessness, I
woke up one morning and this movie poured out of me like a fever dream. All of
my previous films gestated with me for many years but I wrote the first draft
of Mother! (2017)
in 5 days. Within a year we were rolling cameras. And now two years later, it
is an honor to return to the Lido for the world premiere. I imagine people may
ask why the film has such a dark vision. Hubert Selby Jr.,
the author of Requiem for a Dream (2000), taught me that through
staring into the darkest parts of ourselves is where we find the light.
"Mother!" begins as a chamber story about a marriage. At the center
is a woman who is asked to give and give and give until she can give nothing
more. Eventually, the chamber story can't contain the pressure boiling inside.
It becomes something else which is hard to explain or describe. I can't fully
pinpoint where this film all came from. Some came from the headlines we face
every second of every day, some came from the endless buzzing of notifications
on our smartphones, some came from living through the blackout of Hurricane
Sandy in downtown Manhattan, some came from my heart, some from my gut.
Collectively it's a recipe I won't ever be able to reproduce, but I do know
this serving is best drunk as a single dose in a shot glass. Knock it back.
Salute!" [Aug. 2017]
Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky started
dating during the production of this film.
Actors Brian Gleeson and Domhnall
Gleeson, who play the two brothers in the movie, are brothers in real life.
Jennifer Lawrence got
so much into her character that during the climactic scenes, she started hyperventilating
and even cracked a rib.
Paramount canceled the upcoming
Friday the 13th film in order to move ahead with this film.
The film received both boos and a
standing ovation during its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Received an "F" CinemaScore,
the worst possible score, which is very rare: Only 19 features have ever
received an "F". [Sept. 2017]
Edinburgh educated sculptor Jessica
Harrison is the artist whose works are referenced in the film's poster image
released on Mothers Day 2017. Aronofsky cited Harrison as an inspiration,
especially her 'broken' figurines works.
