TRIVIA: Feature film debut of Chris Evans.

Eric Christian Olsen's character, Austin, is a combination of Lance Harbor in Varsity Blues(1999) & Dean Sampson in She's All That (1999). Both of those characters were portrayed by Paul Walker.

Chris Evans had trouble shooting his scenes with Mia Kirshner, particularly having to reject her pleas for sex as she was grinding on him, as he was apparently very turned on.

The filmmakers couldn't get the rights to use footage from She's All That (1999) so they shot the scene with two different people (on the library set) and made the TV blurry so you couldn't tell.

During the big football game near the end, when a bunch of players run off the field, the name on one of the players' shirts is EXTRA.

Buildings in the movie are named for makers of the movies that are being parodied. For example, John Hughes High School, "Anthony Michael Dining Hall" (Anthony Michael Hall), and "Harry Dean Stadium" (Harry Dean Stanton).

Good Charlotte is the house band at the prom.

In Russia, the film is entitled "Not a Children's Movie".

Chyler Leigh has admitted to being under the influence of cocaine throughout the majority of this movie.

Kyle Cease, who plays the "Slow Clap Guy" in this film, also starred as Bogie Lowenstein whose house was used for the flyer party in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999).

Actor Paul Gleason, the Principal in the detention scene, is the same actor who played the role of the Principal from The Breakfast Club (1985) which they're spoofing.

Lacey Chabert's character is a parody of the character played by Jennifer Love Hewitt in Can't Hardly Wait (1998). The two starred together in Party of Five (1994).

TRIVIA: This is based on the French graphic novel "Le Transperceneige". Bong Joon-ho discovered the comic in late 2004, during pre-production of The Host (2006), and was fascinated by the concept of people struggling on the train for survival.

The drawings in the tail section of Snowpiercer were illustrated by Jean-Marc Rochette, the original comic artist of the graphic novel Le Transperceneige.

Sir John Hurt's character's name, Gilliam, is an homage to Terry Gilliam, a director whose filmography includes similarly bleak science fiction, fantasy, and end-of-the-world titles, such as Brazil (1985), Twelve Monkeys (1995), and The Zero Theorem (2013).

Jamie Bell's character, Edgar, was named after Director Edgar Wright.

Writer and Director Bong Joon-ho explained that the protein block was made by combining seaweed, tangle, sugar, and gelatin. Jamie Bell hated it, while Tilda Swintonliked it.

There was no additional lighting used while filming the torchlight fight scene.

Mason's appearance, cold demeanor, and deadpan delivery in this movie are an intentional nod to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Widely considered as one of the forerunners of neo-liberalism, Thatcher is famous, and often despised, for her aggressive cuts to social programs, harsh policies towards working classes in the U.K., and the end of the welfare state system.

The song "Midnight, the Stars, and You" was also played in The Shining (1980).

TRIVIA: Danny Boyle found working on a sci-fi project so exhausting, he vowed never to make another one again.

Danny Boyle was so impressed with Michelle Yeoh's audition, that he told her that she could choose any part in the script and he would give it to her - he was even prepared to change the gender if she had chosen a male character. She ultimately decided on Corazon, the biologist.

The distinctive golden color of the space suits was intended to make them memorable to sci-fi fans. The character "Kenny" from South Park (1997) was used as a design reference for the funnel-shaped helmet. A small number of suits and helmets were built as wearable costumes, so the actors could experience the claustrophobia and react appropriately.

The book "Moondust" by Andrew Smith, a collection of accounts of the men who had walked on the moon, was required reading for all cast members.

Actual sounds received from space that were captured by a Midwestern university were incorporated into the sound design.

Cillian Murphy worked with leading physicist Brian Cox to learn all about advanced physics. This included touring the CERN facility in Switzerland and learned to copy physicists' mannerisms. Murphy ended up copying some of Cox's personal idiosyncrasies, such as his frequent hand movements. The actor also studied Henri-Georges Clouzot's classic The Wages of Fear (1953) to have an understanding of the type of suspense that Danny Boyle was attempting to create. Murphy has claimed that his involvement in Sunshine (2007) converted him from agnosticism to atheism.
