FILM 1491: A MURDER IN THE PARK 

In 1999, just hours before his scheduled execution, convicted killer Anthony Porter's life was saved by a journalism class from Northwestern University, led by renowned Innocence Project pioneer, Professor David Protess. The class seemingly found the real killer, Alstory Simon. Porter was released, becoming the poster boy of the anti-death penalty movement. Because of his case, Illinois eventually abolished the death penalty. The filmmakers present strong evidence that Northwestern's investigation led to the release of the real killer, and imprisoned an innocent man. In October 2013, due in part to this film's investigation, the Cook County State's Attorney's office reopened this case.

Trivia: The scene where Sister Helen was pulled over is based on an incident that happened to Helen Prejean during filming. She thought it was so funny that she asked to have it put into the film.

After being told that she would be played in the film by "a famous actress from Thelma & Louise", Sister Helen Prejean was introduced to Susan Sarandon and said "Thank God, she's Louise."

The real Sister Helen appears outside the prison during a candlelight vigil scene.

The film was very much a family affair for Tim Robbins. Aside from directing his long term companion Susan Sarandon to an Oscar, he also cast his father, Gil Robbins (Bishop Norwich), mother Mary Robbins (aide to the governor), sister Adele Robbins (nurse), and son Jack Henry Robbins (opossum kid) and Miles Robbins (boy in church). His brother, David Robbins, composed the soundtrack.
