Chris and Lyn appear to have the perfect marriage. But when Lyn goes missing, dark secrets are buried. This is no fairytale, but a sordid story of strangely close twin brothers, teenage student lovers, and probable murder. 

MY VERDICT: This story is amazing for so many reasons, but mostly for the fact that someone could go missing for so long without anyone seemingly doing anything at all. It amazed me that the police took everything Chris Dawson said at face value and didn’t check even the easiest of evidence, like phone records to prove his story. One failure and story of incompetence or indifference after another will find you in equal parts frustrated and shocked by this story.

If I have any criticism it’s maybe that it’s an episode or two too long, and repeats information a little too often but the story is fascinating and ongoing, so I’m hoping for more updates in the future.

BOOK 165: GEEK LOVE: KATHERINE DUNN

Geek Love is a novel by Katherine Dunn, published completely by Alfred A. Knopf (a division of Random House) in 1989. Dunn published parts of the novel in Mississippi Mud Book of Days (1983) and Looking Glass Bookstore Review (1988). It was a finalist for the National Book Award.

MY VERDICT: I really wanted to tell you more about this book but at the same time I want to keep everything as a surprise. I didn’t want to add any more synopsis to spoil the things I had to much joy in discovering.

This book is written from the perspective of an albino, hunchbacked dwarf, in two different periods. We follow her as an older woman living in a shared house and are told the story of her past and introduced to her family. The family includes a mother and father who experiment to create unique children.  Oly, our small narrator, shares her life with Siamese-twin, piano playing sisters, a brother with fin-like arms and a talent for showmanship and a ‘norm’ younger brother. They travel with their own carnival followed by other interesting characters including a big-cat trainer, a fly cowboy, sword swallowers, amputees and numerous redheads.

  

FILM 1569: LEGEND

TRIVIA: In the UK, Legend (2015) became the highest grossing 18-rated British film of all time, surpassing Trainspotting (1996).

Despite being very open about his sexuality in this film, in real life Ronnie Kray kept it very private as he saw it as a weakness which could be exploited.

Critic Benjamin Lee of The Guardian wrote a negative review of the film, giving it only two stars: a poster for British distributor Studio Canal displayed these, but placed them between the twins' heads, so that at first glance The Guardian appeared to be one of many outlets that had run four- and five-star reviews (until Lee himself pointed this out on Twitter).

Despite Reggie Krays actions, he became a born - again christian in prison.

The Blind Beggar pub featured in the movie is actually The Royal Oak on Columbia Road in London. The pub has featured in many British TV programs. It was the same pub used in '90s sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart (1993) and was also the scene for Victor Meldrew's failed reunion with friends in One Foot in the Grave (1990).

The Kray brothers story inspired the 1992, Morrissey classic "The Last of the Famous International Playboys".

A Parisian premiere to be attended by actress Duffy was scheduled for November 17, 2015 at the Olympia concert hall, however this event was canceled following the November 13 terror attacks in the French capital.

Aneurin Barnard reprises his role as the photographer David Bailey from We'll Take Manhattan (2012).

When Ronnie Kray enters The Blind Beggar to shoot George Cornell, he passes 3 people at the bar, the barmaid, a man with his back to camera and Martin Kemp. Kemp played Reggie in the 1990 film, The Krays.

FILM 1429: TAKING LIVES

TRIVIA: A scene was shot in which Illeana drives back to her house with the old pick-up and a branch from a tree falls and breaks the windshield. It took several takes to get the shot, and apparently destroyed the last remaining windshields for the pick-up available anywhere in North America at the time. The scene was not used.
