TRIVIA: Frances McDormand was hesitant to take the role when it was offered, but was eventually convinced by her husband, Joel Coen: "Because at the time he gave it to me I was 58... I was concerned that women from this socioeconomic strata did not wait until 38 to have their first child. The film Dixon's mother is watching on telly about "the dead girl" is Don't Look Now; we hear a few brief notes from Pino Donaggio's score. Red is the key colour in both films: the eponymous billboards are bright red and the agency guy is called Red. Both films have a dwarf, a useless priest and hopeless cops, a nasty fall and a massive knife, children left to play alone by water, a kids' toy bobbing in water.

TRIVIA: Bill Murray really bowled three strikes in a row in the scene where his character, Ernie McCracken does the same. The crowd's reaction is genuine and is actually for Murray. Woody Harrelson, on the other hand, was a terrible bowler and according to the Farrelly brothers maybe got one or two strikes throughout the filming.

The person shouting "Ernie, you 'da man!" at the final showdown between McCracken and Munson, is Will Ferrell.

As is the case with most of his films, Bill Murray ad-libbed virtually every line he spoke. He would read over the script, get the general idea, and then discard it. The Farrelly brothers, on the DVD commentary, said that they're very glad he did, because it was funnier.

Jim Carrey was the first choice of the Farrelly brothers to play Ernie McCracken.

Urge Overkill are the band that sing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Reno tournament.

In the scene in the bowling alley restaurant just before Ishmael is about to get beaten up, the three are eating burgers and fries. However, Roy is eating a salad because actor Woody Harrelson is a vegan.

The band playing the bar while Ishmael dances with the other man's girlfriend, is the same band from There's Something About Mary that plays between scenes.

Although Randy Quaid's character is younger than Woody Harrelson's character in the film, Randy is actually 10 years the elder.

TRIVIA: Tom Hanks and Bill Murray were considered for the role of Larry Flynt.

Larry Flynt and his brother Jimmy Flynt are played by real-life brothers Woody Harrelson and Brett Harrelson.

The real Larry Flynt appears as a judge.

One scene involves Hustler's offer of a $1 million reward for bringing JFK's killers to justice. The father of actors Woody Harrelson and Brett Harrelson has long been suspected by conspiracy theorists of involvement in the assassination.

Milos Forman claims Courtney Love showed up to their first meeting while under the influence of drugs. Just when he was going to dismiss her, he realized that Love was perfect for the role of Althea. Forman offered her the role on one condition: that Love would stay clean and undergo regular drug testing during filming. She complied. To this day, Love credits Forman with getting her off drugs which led to a career renaissance.

Courtney Love plays stripper Althea Flynt in this film. Before she was famous, Love was a stripper in real life too.

Courtney Love was arrested several times in Mississippi and Tennessee during filming for wearing her outrageous and revealing costumes in public. While filming a particular scene in a jail, one of the female officers working mistook Love for being a criminal on her way in for booking and handcuffed her.

Despite being portrayed in an Oscar nominated movie Larry Flynt was refused an invitation to the 1997 Academy Awards, so Woody Harrelson brought Flynt to the award shows as his "+1".

The Hollywood mansion shown in the movie was the mansion where the real Larry Flynt lived in the early 1980s.

The real Larry Flynt, when asked who he would like to play him in the movie, picked Michael Douglas.

The character of Doug, one of Larry Flynt's bodyguards in the movie, was bodyguard for the real Flynt at the time the movie was filmed.

The closing argument by Edward Norton was taken verbatim from Alan L. Isaacman's actual closing arguments. Isaacman revealed this in a documentary of the film.

The insurance fees for Courtney Love were so high, the studio would not pay them. Woody Harrelson, the producers (Oliver Stone and Michael Hausman), the director (Milos Forman) and Love paid the fees out-of-pocket.

Patricia Arquette and Mira Sorvino were considered for the role of Althea Leasure.

Trivia: Mickey Rourke was cast as Charlie, but had conflicts with a producer and was replaced by Woody Harrelson.

In the graveyard scene, the grave that the Jack of Diamonds killer is hiding behind is named "Rourke". Mickey Rourke was initially cast in the movie, but dropped out after disagreements with the director.
