FILM 1947: 9 TO 5

FILM 1947: 9 TO 5

TRIVIA: This was Dolly Parton's theatrical film debut. In preparation for her role as Doralee Rhodes, she not only committed to memory her own part, but the parts of every other role in the film. Apparently, the two experienced starring actresses, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, burst out laughing when Parton let on that she believed that pictures were filmed in the chronological order of a film's script.

Apparently, Dolly Parton was cast because Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin felt that she would "bring them the West". Parton was both a lead actress (along with the other two) and sang the title song, "9 to 5", which was Oscar nominated and won two Grammys. In an interview with Isaac Mizrahi, Parton states that when she wrote and performed the theme song to Tomlin and Fonda, she used her long acrylic nails to create the beat of the song.

The movie spurred a reasonably successful sitcom television series Nine to Five (1982) which went for eighty-five episodes, and aired between 1982 and 1988. The first three seasons were broadcast on ABC between spring 1982 and fall 1983, while the second and final season aired in syndication between 1986 and 1988. Dolly Parton's younger sister Rachel Dennison played Parton's role Doralee Rhodes on the show.

Dolly Parton accepted the role with the condition that she would write and sing the theme song, which was nominated for an Academy Award and won two Grammys. Parton made the same deal for almost every other movie, in which she has starred. The exception was Steel Magnolias (1989), which declined to use the Parton-penned song "Eagle When She Flies".

To prepare for her role as Judy Bernly, a middle-aged divorcĂ©e entering the workforce, Jane Fonda interviewed numerous women who had entered the workforce late in life due to divorce or widowhood. It inspired Judy's first day outfit: a frilly, conservative wardrobe with over-sized glasses, elaborate hats, and an over-done hairstyle.

Dolly Parton's almost shy and reclusive husband, Carl Dean, never appears in public with her nor accompanies her to any musical concerts or other events. One of the few times he made an exception was during filming of this movie, Dolly's theatrical film debut. When he walked into the studio, Jane Fonda pointed him out across the room and said, "Look at that handsome man! I call him, he's mine!" to Lily Tomlin. Dolly then "spilled the beans" that he is her husband. After a few minutes conversing together, Dolly broke the news of being married to him and introduced him to the other actresses. When Jane heard Dolly's remark, she was extremely and deeply embarrassed, especially after she made a remark to Lily as if she was out "husband hunting".

As of 2018-2019, a re-make movie with the original stars is in production.

The first female dominated film to gross $100 million dollars.

FILM 1673: SWIMMING WITH SHARKS

TRIVIA: Buddy Ackerman's character was inspired by real life movie mogul Joel Silver whom Huang used to work for.

Director George Huang was convinced to make this film by Robert Rodriguez. Huang used to work for Columbia Pictures, which acquired the distribution rights for Rodriguez' film El Mariachi (1992) in 1991. The two met and Huang shared some of his would-be movie stories with Rodriguez, who - as documented in his memoir, "Rebel Without a Crew" - told Huang that he should simply "go out and make a movie." As such, Huang resigned from his position and set out to make this film.

'Michelle Forbes' said she got cast in the film during a time when she was frustrated by the entertainment industry and considering another career, feelings which fit perfectly with the nature of the film.

FILM 1288: HORRIBLE BOSSES 2

TRIVIA: This is the first sequel Jennifer Aniston has ever done in her entire career.

Sudeikis stated in an interview that they wanted to put a gag in the film, where Jamie Fox's Character says to the Nick, Curt, and Dale , "You crackers got to go. I have three other crackers coming in", and as the trio get up to leave, the three characters from The Hangover movies come and sit at the booth. They later decided against it, because it would take the audience out of the movie. Zack Galifianakis and Ed Helms (Alan and Stu from the Hangover Films) later heard about this and thought the idea was hilarious.

This is the second film to co-star Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz. They previously appeared together in 'Django Unchained (2012)'.

The cast has a total of five Academy awards thanks to one from Jamie Foxx (Ray), two from Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects, American Beauty), and two from Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained).

Tommy Lee Jones and Jack Nicholson were considered for the role that went to Christoph Waltz.

FILM 1259: SCROOGED

TRIVIA: When the Ghost Of Christmas Present (Carol Kane) grabbed Bill Murray's lip she tore his lip so badly that filming was halted for several days.

All of Bill Murray's actor brothers - John Murray, Joel Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray - make appearances in this film.

When Frank (Bill Murray) throws water on the waiter he sees burning, he says, "I'm sorry. You know I thought you were Richard Pryor." This is a reference to an event in Pryor's life when, high on cocaine, the comedian accidentally caught himself on fire and ran down a busy street in LA.

Bill Murray and director Richard Donner reportedly did not enjoy working together creating a lot of tension on set. When asked by film critic Roger Ebert if he had any disagreements with Donner, Murray replied: "Only a few. Every single minute of the day. That could have been a really, really great movie. The script was so good. There's maybe one take in the final cut movie that is mine. We made it so fast, it was like doing a movie live. He kept telling me to do things louder, louder, louder. I think he was deaf."

Cameo: Miles Davis:  As a street musician.

FILM 1190: COOL HAND LUKE

TRIVIA: In the "road-tarring" sequence, the actors actually blacktopped a mile-long stretch of highway for the county.

The opening scene, where Luke is cutting off the heads of parking meters, was filmed in Lodi, California. After the filming, the city did not replace the meters, and for many years afterward, you could go there and see a block long row of metal posts, sans meters.

Luke's prison number (37) is a reference to the Bible - Luke 1:37. ("For with God nothing shall be impossible.")
