BOOK 152: CAMERA LUCIDA: ROLAND BARTHES

In a deeply personal discussion of the lasting emotional effect of certain photographs, Barthes considers photography as asymbolic, irreducible to the codes of language or culture, acting on the body as much as on the mind. The book develops the twin concepts of studium and punctum: studium denoting the cultural, linguistic, and political interpretation of a photograph, punctum denoting the wounding, personally touching detail which establishes a direct relationship with the object or person within it.

BOOK 149: BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE MUSEUM: KATE ATKINSON

Behind the Scenes at the Museum is the first novel of British novelist Kate Atkinson. The book covers the experiences of Ruby Lennox, a girl from a middle-class English family living in York. The museum of the title is York Castle Museum, which includes among its exhibits the facades of old houses from the city, similar to the one in which Ruby's family lives.

By interspersing flashbacks with the narrative of Ruby's own life, the book chronicles the lives of four generations of women from Ruby's great-grandmother Alice to Ruby's mother's failed dreams.

Ruby's own life is told in thirteen chapters, written in the first person, documenting key periods in Ruby's life from 1951 ("Conception" beginning with the words "I exist!") to 1992. Between each chapter are (non-consecutive) flashbacks that tell the story from the point of view of one of the other members of Ruby's family—including her great-grandmother Alice, her grandmother Nell and her mother Bunty.

A CRUISE TO ITALY AND CROATIA

I have been meaning to post about my holiday for a little while (I got back last Thursday) but have been so busy that I just have not had the time.  I went on a cruise to Croatia and Italy; it was a birthday present to my Dad who wanted to go on a family holiday. 

We had five stop offs, we started in Dubrovnik, then onto Rovinj, Trieste, Venice, Zadar, and Split.  I had never been to either of these countries before and had no idea what to expect but I was definitely impressed.  Both countries are very picturesque, with mountains in the distance, beautiful little red roofed buildings, castles, ruins and clear water at the coast. 

My dad took thousands of pictures and walked miles and miles.  Me, my sister and my mum were a little more laid back.  We ate a lot of ice cream, the ice cream in Italy (Venice especially) is the best I’ve ever tasted, I mostly have lemon flavor. 

Venice is one of the most unreal places I’ve ever been and getting up at 6 in the morning to watch the ship go into the Grand Canal was really very special.
