FILM 1815: DAREDEVIL

FILM 1815: DAREDEVIL

TRIVIA: Ben Affleck was virtually blind, as he had to wear heavy-duty contact lenses, which blocked out most of his vision.

This is the first time Colin Farrell ever used his own Irish accent in an American movie.

As a fan of the character, Ben Affleck made a point of reading every single comic book that featured Daredevil as preparation for his role.

Although Ben Affleck is a fan of the character, acting him out was such an unpleasant experience that, in November 2006, Affleck stated that he would never reprise the role, having felt "by playing a superhero in 'Daredevil', I have inoculated myself from ever playing another superhero. Wearing a costume was a source of humiliation for me, and something I wouldn't want to do again soon." It is believed that the Daredevil costume was very uncomfortable to wear. However, in 2013 Affleck accepted an agreement to play Batman, starting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

Michael Clarke Duncan was often put on lifts or boxes, to make him tower over everyone else, particularly in his scenes with Ben Affleck, who is 6'4". The same thing was done for Duncan in The Green Mile (1999).

Stan Lee disliked the film, because he felt the film was "too tragic".

The film pays homage to numerous "Daredevil" writers and artists: Stan Lee: Daredevil's original creator makes his cameo as the man who young Matt Murdock stops from crossing the street. Wrote Daredevil (1964-1969). Kirby, the lab assistant played by Kevin Smith (see final item): Comic book artist Jack Kirby (assorted Daredevil covers in 1964-1968). Father Everett: Bill Everett, Daredevil's original artist (drew first issue of Daredevil in 1964, then assorted covers 1966-1972). Jose Quesada (the rapist): Joe Quesada, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, and artist of Daredevil 1998-2000. Colan (a boxer): Gene Colan, another Daredevil artist 1966-1974. John Romita (the boxer, against whom Jack Murdock is supposed to dive): John Romita Sr., Sr. was a Daredevil artist in 1966, and John Romita Jr. was a Daredevil artist 1988-1990. Kane (a thug): Gil Kane, Daredevil cover artist 1971=1978. Miller, Mack, Bendis (other boxers): Frank Miller, writer and artist 1979-1983, David Mack, artist 1999-2001, and Brian Michael Bendis, writer of Daredevil beginning 1999, and was still doing so when the film came out. Kevin Smith, author whose Daredevil work is collected in "Daredevil Visionaries: Kevin Smith", appears as the lab assistant Kirby, named for another artist mentioned above.

Ben Affleck was cast as Daredevil because Kevin Smith (appearing here as Kirby the lab tech) suggested him to Writer and Director Mark Steven Johnson. Smith, who directed Affleck in four films from the "View Askewniverse" series, and would later reunite in Jersey Girl (2004), also wrote at least one of the comic books, on which this movie is based.

Michael Clarke Duncan and Ben Affleck appeared in Armageddon (1998).

BOOK 135: MY BORING ASS LIFE: THE UNCOMFORTABLY CANDID DIARY OF KEVIN SMITH: KEVIN SMITH

Some of the sections of the book (from Wikipedia)

This is the second book composed of writings by filmmaker Kevin Smith, the first being Silent Bob Speaks.

Me and My Shadow
Of all the entries in the book, this section is the longest and probably most serious subject that Smith deals with: his friendship of Jason Mewes and the latter's massive drug addiction. It details his addiction during the filming of Dogma up to his sobriety.
(Mewes eventually relapsed and Smith hosted a weekly podcast to keep him sober)

The Original Idea For Mallrats

Lasting about nine pages, Smith talks about how he intended to have a much more elaborate opening prologue/credits scene for his sophomore film Mallrats. In this, T.S Quint, goes on a televised game show and loses after babbling for ages and giving the other team the answer to the question. An altercation with the team ensues, and he accidentally punches the show's host after the team captain ducks his head. According to Smith, the studio felt it was too long, ordered it to be cut, and replaced it with a smaller scene taking place at a party instead. However, that scene was later scrapped during post-production. Due to this setback, as well as some other scenes, including a Silent Bob masturbation joke, he was forced to excise from the script, he feels this hurt the movie's chances for a bigger box office reception. As in Evening With Kevin Smith, he revealed that while he removed the masturbation scene, a similar scene took place in a film released four years later: There's Something About Mary.

FILM 1325: CATCH AND RELEASE

TRIVIA: Jennifer Garner was pregnant while filming this movie.

Jason Lee was offered the part of Sam but turned it down to provide the voice of Syndrome in The Incredibles (2004). The role was subsequently offered to Kevin Smith.

Kevin Smith was allowed to pick his own wardrobe for the film. Because of that, most of the clothes he wears in the movie bear his trademark number "37".

Kevin Smith was cast as Sam after Susannah Grant saw him in his Q&A DVD An Evening with Kevin Smith (2002).

FILM 1267: TUSK

TRIVIA: Quentin Tarantino was offered the role of Guy Lapointe, but turned it down saying he dug the script and "couldn't wait to watch Michael Parks let loose his internal Kraken," but he had no interest in acting at the moment.

The first film in Kevin Smith's Canada-based trilogy. The second film will be Yoga Hosers (2015), based on Smodcast episode #288. The final installment will be Moose Jaws (2016).

The idea for the movie came during the recording of "SModcast 259: The Walrus and The Carpenter." Smith with his longtime friend and producer Scott Mosier discussed an article featuring a Gumtree ad where a homeowner was offering free room and board if the lodger agreed to dress as a walrus. The hosts spent almost an hour of the episode reconstructing and telling a hypothetical story based on the ad. Smith then told his Twitter followers to tweet "#WalrusYes" if they wanted to see their hypothetical turned into a film, or "#WalrusNo" if they didn't. The vast majority of Smith's followers agreed that the film should be made. The post turned out to be a prank by Brighton poet and prankster Chris Parkinson, a fan of Smith who hoped to get in touch with him. Kevin Smith eventually hired Parkinson as a producer.

Kevin Smith and Johnny Depp's daughters play clerks. Clerks. (1994) launched Kevin Smith's career as a movie director and script writer.

Wallace's ringtone is from the Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman podcast "Hollywood Babble-On." The song is actually a fan-made song created using Garman's impression of Al Pacino.

In Teddy and Ally's room, where they miss phone calls from Wallace, a framed picture of Kevin Smith's Dog, Shecky, is on the wall.

Ponder rock, where Howard Howe gets stranded, is a reference to the podcast "Smodcast #224: Ponder Rockin' with Emo-Kev", posted September 16, 2012. Kevin and Scott talked about a cassette tape Kevin found in which he dictated his banal thoughts when he was 19 years old.
