SPOTLIGHT ON: PAPERLESS POST

SPOTLIGHT ON: PAPERLESS POST

When I was contacted to review Paperless PostI was excited. I was aware of their concept, I’d always loved their designs and I was looking forward to trying it out. The whole concept of coins had always put me off before and I had never really needed to use their service so I mostly just looked at their designs as eye candy. And alas it seems it will stay that way.

The thing is, I’ve realized, Paperless Post is just not for me.

I am a stationary nut – I buy greeting cards wherever I go. I love them so much that I make my own. I am the kind of girl with a big box of cards for all different occasions - just in case. I get it from my Mum, you could go to her with the request for a Get Well Soon card for someone who just had their appendix out and she’d probably have it. I’m not that organized, but I am the kind of person who has multiple new baby card in both sexes (and one for twins) without knowing anyone who’s pregnant at the time. And all the cards are gorgeous.

And I can say that the designs on Paperless Post are varied, well designed and beautiful.  There are collaborations with some of my favourite designers and illustrators. Rifle Paper Co., Kelly Wearstler, kate spade new york, to name but a few.

So you may ask, what is your problem? Well it is my problem, and it might just be specific to me, my problem is: I don’t really email. I started this post project with an idea in mind; I was going to get in touch with some old friends; friends that I had not contacted for a long time – people I used to work with, people I went to college with, people I went to school with. Problem was; I didn’t have any of their email addresses. I mostly communicated with people via text, via Whatsapp (which didn’t exist when I knew some of these friends but works with mobile numbers which I do have) and also Facebook (all you need to find people on there is a name). And so I was in a dilemma, my plan didn’t work to send a beautifully designed and spontaneous electronic card if I had to text the person first and ask for their email address – all the spontaneity out the window – and also a ‘why are you texting me out of the blue?’ conversation – it just didn’t work.

So to plan B – I was planning a dinner party – a very small one with around five friends – the dinner party invitations on Paperless Post are stunning, so I was looking forward to this plan. I had another problem – I only knew two of the guests email addresses – again I was foiled. The invitation looked beautiful though.

I then realized there was a new option on Paperless Post – a flyer. This one said it could shared via text, something you couldn’t do with cards. I also found problems with this. It wasn’t as easy to send as I thought. I honestly was not trying to find faults with this service but it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I was expecting that you’d be able to put a phone number in and it would text someone your flyer – as far as I could tell it didn’t work like that – you had to send yourself the share link and then you could put that in a text or Whatsapp message. It all seemed more complicated than just sending a message inviting people over in a Whatsapp group message. On the plus side though, it was super easy to design and it looked really good. I was also annoyed that it forced me to put in a destination. I just wanted to write ‘my house’ as everyone I was inviting knew where I lived – this was not an option, this was frustrating to me.

I think all these services would work great under the right circumstances. If you’re planning a work party and you’re inviting an institution that primary communicates over email, than these would be perfect. If you wanted to send out preliminary Save the Date emails to friends and family members and you could make sure you had an email address for everybody before you started, then this service is perfect and as I said they’d look professional and beautiful. If you always send a card to your Aunt in Australia but the postage costs are getting stupid, then this is great (and I might do this – I don’t know if you could tell but that example was one straight out of my real life) you can send a beautiful card without any of the high postage costs.

I have to say though one of the biggest flaws for me in this Paperless Post service is the paperless part. I know it’s an excellent way to save the environment and use less paper and I commend it for it’s environmental benefits, and I know most cards get thrown in the bin, but, I like paper. I love receiving birthday cards in the post. I hardly get any post – everything is sent through email – I don’t even get bills anymore. So to receive a hand written card in the post is a treat and come on environmentalists - it only happens a couple of times a year!

I’ll post below some of my favourtie designs – as I said Paperless Post cannot be faulted on their design – everything about the website is so stylish and it’s easy to navigate and looks great.

And if anyone has any stories about using the service themselves – good or bad – I’d love to know in the comments below!

FILM 2009: GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST

FILM 2009: GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST

TRIVIA: This is the second time that Christa B. Allen has played the younger version of a character played by Jennifer Garner. The first was in 13 Going on 30 (2004).

Originally set up at Walt Disney Pictures with Ben Affleck attached to play the lead character, and Kevin Smith to direct. Production was to begin in the fall of 2003, but budgetary concerns and the failure of Gigli (2003) forced the studio to cancel the film one month prior to shooting. Ironically, when the film did get made years later, Affleck's wife Jennifer Garner appeared in it. And the role Affleck was supposed to play, was instead played by his Dazed and Confused (1993) co-star, Matthew McConaughey.

The movie features Lacey Chabert as the bride and Rachel Boston as a bridesmaid, who both now regularly star in romantic comedies featuring weddings filmed for the Hallmark Channel.

FILM 1994: MURIEL'S WEDDING

FILM 1994: MURIEL'S WEDDING

TRIVIA: The writer/director P.J. Hogan wanted to use the music of ABBA in the film. At first, permission for the music to be used was denied. When the director promised to fly to Europe to plead his case to the founders of the band, permission was granted, as long as the band received a percentage of the film profits. The film turned out to be a big international hit, and thus helped inspire the very successful Broadway show which became the movie Mamma Mia! (2008).

Toni Collette gained 40 pounds in 7 weeks with the help of a dietitian for this role.

Bill Hunter was filming The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) and Muriel's Wedding (1994) at the same time, each requiring him to have different length hair, beard and to be in different parts of the country. Both films developed international cult followings and prominently featured the music of ABBA.

Included among the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", edited by Steven Schneider.

In the video store where Muriel works, a poster for the movie Strictly Ballroom is visible. Bill Hunter, who plays Bill Heslop (Muriel's father), Is also in Strictly Ballroom in the role of Barry Fife.

P.J. Hogan based Muriel's personality on himself, but Muriel's actions were inspired by his sister, who embezzled $15,000 from their father and then disappeared to Sydney to live with a friend.

Betty Heslop passes a magazine called Womans Day in the supermarket. Womans Day is a real magazine which did a feature article about the movie. The same cover (as the one in the movie) was used.

FILM 1987: CRAZY RICH ASIANS

FILM 1987: CRAZY RICH ASIANS

TRIVIA: Netflix wanted to produce the film and offered a much bigger budget, but Kevin Kwan deliberately turned down the offer in favor of a modest $30-million budget from Warner Bros. This was done to send a message that Asian-American studio movies are commercially viable.

Awkwafina was supposed to wear several different wigs throughout the movie; however, after putting on the blonde wig, it was decided to scrap other wigs and just keep the one. The joke about this was kept in the scene where actor Ken Jeong starts calling her "Asian Ellen [Degeneres]".

This is Henry Golding's first movie; he was only a travel show host before this, but was introduced to the project after a producer met a studio accountant in Singapore, who suggested his name. However, Henry turned down to audition for the role several times as he did not think he was good enough for the part and believed a "legitimate" actor would be better suited. It was not until the director, Jon Chu, reached out to him via a mutual Facebook friend that he was finally convinced to do the part.

As of October 2018, the film had grossed over $235 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy in a decade.

The tiger in the foyer of Tyersall Park (where Nick and Astrid would hide their cigarettes) was an interesting movie prop. Per the Hollywood Reporter, "The mansion's taxidermied tiger was problematic. The best specimen was in London, and the production designer realized he'd have trouble getting it across international borders. Instead, he hired sculptors in Thailand, to create a tiger out of foam and fur, only to have it held up in Thai customs because agents thought it was the real thing. 'We finally got it installed the night before we filmed the scene,' he says."

FILM 1977: THE WEDDING PLANNER

FILM 1977: THE WEDDING PLANNER

TRIVIA: Jennifer Love Hewitt was developing a separate film with the same premise for her to star in but was forced to cancel the project when this film was released.

Brendan Fraser was set to play the role of Dr. Steve/Eddie, but scheduling conflicts with filming the movie Bedazzled (2000) prevented him.

In an early scene in Matthew McConaughey's office, he indicates a framed picture of his "sister". The prop is actually a picture of associate producer and choreographer Anne Fletcher, who had a scene in the movie that was cut.

Franny's Mother, played by Joanna Gleason, sings very badly in the movie and is asked numerous times by her daughter not to sing. In fact, Gleason has a very good singing voice and has appeared in several Broadway musicals, including "Into the Woods" for which she won the 1988 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

SPOTLIGHT ON: BASIC INVITE

SPOTLIGHT ON: BASIC INVITE

Today I want to share with you a great invite website called Basic Invite.
As you know I am a huge fan of stationary and it’s always great to see a website that gets it right.

The website is beautiful and so easy to use and they have some really excellent features like how they can capture your addresses from your social media – I didn’t even know this kind of thing was possible.

They can print in almost any colour, which is great especially if your wedding has a really specific shade of green, for example, and you can get a custom printed sample sent to you just to judge it against your placemats or bowtie. I love the fact that they offer foils not just in gold and silver but also in rose gold which is the kind of gold I’m really feeling right now. Take a look at their free wedding websites – I know about a hundred people who would have loved to use this feature for their wedding - not only are the templates beautifully designed but all the features, like digital RSVPs, maps and registries are exactly the things they needed.

It seems to me, and I don’t know about you, that this time of year everyone is having babies, and I wish I knew about this website when people asked me about their baby shower invites – they’ve got such a great range that they can be the inspiration for your theme too – I love the idea of a firefighter theme or a woodland or floral theme. They’ve even got specific invites for twins!

The website has really responsive design features and I think such a quick and easy way to order those thank you cards too – I especially love their sticker section – they’ve got a huge amount of designs and you could use them to close your letters for a long time to come – not just for your wedding stationary.

And the great news is: Right now Basic Invite is offering 15% off with coupon code: 15FF51

1. BLOSSOMING LOVE WEDDING INVITATIONS

2. FREE WEDDING WEBSITES

3. GARDEN FLOWERS BABY SHOWER INVITATIONS

4. FIREFIGHTER BABY SHOWER INVITATIONS

5. WATERCOLOR BOUQUET STICKERS

This post is sponsored by a product exchange with Basic Invite but all opinions are my own.

FILM 1851: THE VILLAGE

FILM 1851: THE VILLAGE

TRIVIA: Joaquin Phoenix made a wooden walking stick for Bryce Dallas Howard during the 19th-century preparation the actors participated in before the film. He engraved the name of her character, Ivy, on the walking stick.

Director M. Night Shyamalan put the entire cast through a 19th century "boot camp" in order for them to get a good feel for the time period.

The director cast Bryce Dallas Howard without an audition after seeing her perform on stage.

Bryce Dallas Howard and Judy Greer, who played sisters Ivy and Kitty, would later play sisters again in Jurassic World (2015).

The role of Lucius Hunt was written for Joaquin Phoenix.

Kirsten Dunst was replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard after dropping out to star in Elizabethtown (2005). Dunst and Howard later appeared together in Spider-Man 3 (2007).

The film is included on the film critic Roger Ebert's "Most Hated" list.

Second collaboration between Joaquin Phoenix, Cherry Jones, and M. Night Shyamalan after previously working together on Signs (2002).

FILM 1825: FORCES OF NATURE

FILM 1825: FORCES OF NATURE

TRIVIA: About a year after the release of the movie, Sandra Bullock actually did survive a plane crash when the corporate jet she was a passenger in skidded off the runway at the Jackson Hole, Wyoming airport. She was not injured in the crash.

David Strickland's last film.

PERSONAL POST: MY RINGS

I have three rings that I wear everyday. Even during the time I was decorating my house every week and couldn’t wear the rings on my fingers, I would put them on a chain around my neck. I wear them this way so I have them with me always.

My first ring is not worn for sentimental reasons, its just a ring id been looking for for a long time and by chance happened upon it at Brick Lane market. I love Brick Lane and don’t go as often as I once did. It’s a wonderful place and the markets (as there’s more than one) are filled with some beautiful things, crafts, art, vintage items and new original fashion.

The next ring is one of the most romantic gifts ive ever been given. My boyfriend bought this for me for Christmas one year. Its an item that can be a good conversation starter. Engraved onto the outside and inside of this ring are the lyrics to ‘our song’. Having a song I think is a bit of a dying tradition. I know a few people who have been planning a wedding and I always ask ‘what’s the song for the first dance?’ and ‘do you have a song?’ A lot of people’s wedding songs become their song but not many people have one to begin with. I think Nick and I are in a unique position where we know the very song that was playing when we went from being friends to realizing we were in love with each other. Nothing happened for a long time after that because we were really good friends and it’s a scary step to make but after eight years we’re still together. And the words in the ring? ‘All I ever wanted’ on the outside and ‘All I ever needed’ on the inside from Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence. Wow I still remember that night and that feeling!

The third ring is a ring that I’d wanted for a while. The problem was that it was only available from America. It was from one of my favourite jewellery shops Catbird. I’d put it in my shopping basket so many times and was so close to ordering it but when looking at the postage being almost as much as the ring itself and the chance of it going missing stopped me every time. So when my sister and her fiancé (now husband) said they were going to New York, I asked if they had time if they’d go get it for me. They said yes! When they came back not only did they have the ring but also the story about how they’d got there. They got to the street I’d given for the address not realizing that this was a very very long road and they walked for around three hours to get there. They said it was one of the most interesting walks they’d ever taken, seeing how New York is divided into sections and seeing all the different cultures and people along the way. In a way it was a present to both of us. When they found out my Dad was taking me to New York for my 30ththey gave me a voucher for Catbird. And although we didn’t have the time to do the walk, we got to see a lot of the things they’d seen on the taxi ride over. This time I got some earrings and a cat ring tray. It was such a thoughtful present and such a lovely day!

Do you have jewellery that you wear every day?

FILM 1754: TED 2

FILM 1754: TED 2

TRIVIA: According to the DVD commentary, Seth MacFarlane witnessed Justin Bieber walk out of a screening of this movie, after Morgan Freeman insults Ted, comparing him to Bieber.

Guy's lover is played by Michael Dorn, best known for his role as Worf on Star Trek: the Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). During the Comic-Con scene, he cosplays as this character.

Stephen Collins had a major cameo. He was replaced after a child sex abuse video confession.

When Sam is playing the guitar, and singing in the countryside, all the little animals gather round to listen. The song and chord structure is very similar to the scene from ¡Three Amigos! (1986), when, Chevy, Steve, and Martin sing the cowboy lullaby "Blue Shadows on the Trail".

The Harrison Ford movie Ted makes a reference to is called 'Regarding Henry'.
